Photos from the Mekong - The brick and Salt factories





























Just to reiterate, the bricks are obtained from the clay from the rice fields when the harvesting is done..It's put through a mold, and then dried, then fired.. The rice husks are used for fuel and the resulting ash is then applied to the rice fields as fertiliser..
Salt is refined to a white state, however in Sonnys' (our tour leader) province they harvest the salt and use ash from as a filter so their salt is already pure and doesn't require the same intensive labour process as that which we had seen.. I asked him why he doesn't share his knowledge and his response was,"because it would be rude".. hmmm...
